Workplace safety is at the top of everyone's to-do list. Sometimes, however, we need to step back to make sure we're doing it right and avoiding the pitfalls. So, let's take a look at some do's and don'ts for workplace safety.

Do:

Use and follow safety signs and tags. These warnings could prevent injury, fires and damage to equipment.

Wear appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE). Regardless of how quick the task is or how skilled the worker, if PPE is required, it should be worn.

Use properly grounded cords and equipment. If equipment has a third prong, it's there to ensure safe operation. If the prong has been removed, avoid using the equipment until a trained professional fixes it.

Don't:

Don't overload outlets by using splitters. Doing so could produce excess heat and the risk of fire.

Don't plug more than one heat-producing appliance into the same outlet. Appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers and other heavy energy users create a lot of heat. Make sure they're spread to multiple outlets to prevent overheating of the outlet itself.

Don't use extension cords except as a last resort. Extension cords are a temporary solution that come with an increased risk of fires and tripping. Consider using a different outlet or relocating the equipment if possible.

When it comes to workplace safety, be sure to do it right and don't ignore any of these guidelines.
